AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard (AA1000SES)
Having systematic and continuous stakeholder engagement processes leads to better communication and greater learning and innovation.
AccountAbility has been at the forefront of developing tools and standards for quality stakeholder engagement for many years. The AA1000 Assurance Standard as well as the Stakeholder Engagement Handbook, developed in association with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), provide practical and understandable guidance on how to develop a robust and balanced stakeholder engagement mechanism.

The AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard Exposure Draft provides a principles-based, open-source framework for quality stakeholder engagement. it offers a robust basis for designing, implementing, evaluating and assuring the quality of stakeholder engagement.
The standard provides guidance for continuous improvement, recognizing different levels of practice and can be used as a stand-alone standard or as an integral element of other standards (e.g. AA1000AS, GRI, ISO). The AA1000SES is relevant across a full range of engagements from micro-level issues specific engagements to macro-level engagements on major societal concerns and applies to businesses, civil society, public bodies and multi-stakeholder networks and partnerships.
The UNEP Stakeholder Engagement Manual is a more practical, hands-on publication to help companies understand the 'how' of stakeholder engagement. The AA1000SES and the UNEP Stakeholder Engagement Manual can be used together.
